| ఎవరు అదృష్టవంతులు? మంచి గురువు దొరికిన శిష్యుడా? మంచి శిష్యుడు దొరికిన గురువా? మంచి శిష్యులు చాలా మంది ఉంటారు. కాని మంచి గురువులు మాత్రం అతి కొద్దిమందే ఉంటారు. వారు దొరికినవాళ్లు మాత్రం కచ్చితంగా అదృష్టవంతులే. |
| ప్రతి విద్యార్థీ ఒక అద్భుతమనీ ప్రతి పిల్లవాడిలోనూ ఏదో ఒక శక్తి ఉంటుందనీ గ్రహించే గురువు ప్రతి శిష్యుణ్ణీ మెరిపిస్తాడు. అలా మెరిపించిన తన గురువుల గురించి మాజీ రాష్ట్రపతి అబ్దుల్ కలామ్ తన ఆత్మకథలో చెప్పుకున్నారు. ఆయన గురువుల గురించి ఆయన మాటల్లో.... నేను రామనాథపురం హైస్కూల్లో చేరగానే నాలోని జిజ్ఞాసి మేల్కొన్నాడు. అప్పుడు నాకు మార్గదర్శకంగా నిలబడిన నా ఉపాధ్యాయుడు ఇయదురై సొలొమోన్. ఆయన చాలా విశాల దృక్పథంతో తన తరగతి గదిలోని విద్యార్థుల్నందరినీ ఉత్సాహపరిచేవారు. 'జీవితంలో విజయం పొందడానికి మూడు అంశాల మీద పట్టు సాధించాలి- అవి కోరిక, నమ్మకం, ఆశపెట్టుకోవడమూను' అని ఆయన అంటుండేవారు. ఆయన నుంచి నేను నేర్చుకున్న గొప్ప పాఠం అదే. నేనేదైనా సాధించాలంటే ముందు నేను దాన్ని గట్టిగా ఆకాంక్షించాలనీ, అది తప్పక జరిగి తీరుతుందని ప్రగాఢంగా విశ్వసించాలనీ ఆయన నుంచి తెలుసుకున్నాను. ఒక ఉదాహరణ ఇస్తాను. నాకు చిన్నప్పటినుంచీ ఆకాశపు రహస్యాలన్నా, పక్షుల ప్రయాణాలన్నా అమితాసక్తి. కొంగలూ, సముద్రపు గువ్వలూ ఎగురుతుండటం చూస్తూ నేను కూడా ఎగరాలని కోరుకునేవాణ్ణి. సాధారణ గ్రామీణ బాలుడినయినప్పటికీ నేను కూడా ఏదో ఒకరోజు ఆకాశంలో విహరించగలనని ఎంతగా నమ్మానంటే మా రామేశ్వరం నుంచి ఆకాశయానం చేసిన మొదటి బాలుణ్ణి నేనే కావడం విశేషం.ఇదంతా ఇయదురై సొలోమోన్ పుణ్యం. ఆయన ఎందుకు గొప్ప ఉపాధ్యాయుడంటే ఆయన వల్లనే నేను ఏమాత్రం చదువుకోని తల్లిదండ్రుల బిడ్డనయినా కూడా ఏది కావాలనుకుంటే అది కాగలవని నమ్మాను. 'విశ్వాసంతో నువ్వు నీ విధిని కూడా తిరిగి రాయగలవు' అనేవాడాయన. దయగల గురువు ఆరోజుల్లో మాకు ప్రొఫెషనల్ చదువుల గురించిన ఊహ కూడా లేదు. ఉన్నత చదువులంటే అప్పటికి కాలేజీ చదువు మాత్రమే. అప్పటికి దగ్గరలో ఉన్న కాలేజీ తిరుచినాపల్లిలో ఉండేది. దానిని క్లుప్తంగా ట్రిచీ అనీ అనేవారు. 1950లో ఇంటర్మీడియట్ పరీక్షకు చదవడానికి ట్రిచీ సెయింట్ జోసెఫ్ కాలేజీలో చేరాను. పరీక్షల గ్రేడుల లెక్కన చూస్తే నేనేమంత చురుకైన విద్యార్థిని కాను. సెయింట్ జోసెఫ్ కాలేజీలో రెవరెండ్ ఫాదర్ టి.ఎన్.సెకీరా వంటి ఉపాధ్యాయుడు లభించడం నా అదృష్టం. ఆయన మా ఇంగ్లిషు లెక్చరర్ మాత్రమే కాకుండా మా హాస్టలు వార్డెన్ కూడా. ప్రతి రాత్రి రెవరెండ్ ఫాదర్ ప్రతి విద్యార్థినీ వచ్చి పలకరించేవాడు. చేతిలో బైబిలుండేది. ఆయన సహనం శక్తి అద్భుతమైనవి. విద్యార్థుల ప్రతి చిన్న సామాన్య అవసరాన్ని కూడా పట్టించుకునే శ్రద్ధ ఆయనది. ఎంత శ్రద్ధ అంటే దీపావళి నాడు మేం తలంటు పోసుకోవడానికి నువ్వుల నూనె పంచేంత. నేను సెయింట్ జోసెఫ్ కాలేజీలో నాలుగేళ్లు ఉన్నాను. నా హాస్టలు మూడో సంవత్సరంలో నేను విజిటేరియన్ మెస్ కార్యదర్శిగా ఎంపిక అయినప్పుడు ఒక ఆదివారం మా రెక్టర్ రివరెండ్ ఫాదర్ కలథిన్ని లంచ్కి పిలిచాం. మా మెనూ మా మా కుటుంబ నేపథ్యాల నుంచి ఎంపిక చేసిన మంచి వంటకాలన్నిటితో కూడి ఉంది. ఫలితం! మేం ఎదురుచూడనంత ప్రశంస. రెవరెండ్ ఫాదర్ తన ప్రశంసతో మమ్మల్ని ముంచెత్తాడు. మా మామూలు సంభాషణలో ఒక పిల్లవాడి కుతూహలంతో ఆయన పాల్గొన్నాడు. అది కలకాలం గుర్తుండే అనుభవం. నేను సెయింట్ జోసెఫ్లో నా చివరి సంవత్సరంలో ఉన్నప్పుడు ఇంగ్లిష్ సాహిత్యం పట్ల మక్కువ పెంచుకున్నాను. ఇంగ్లిష్లోని సర్వశ్రేష్ట రచనల్ని చదువుతుండేవాణ్ణి. టాల్స్టాయ్, స్కాట్, హార్డీల పట్ల ప్రత్యేక ఆసక్తి ఉండేది. బిఎస్సి డిగ్రీ పూర్తిచేశాక ఫిజిక్సు నా సబ్జెక్టు కాదని గ్రహించాను. నా కలలు నిజం కావాలంటే నేను ఇంజనీరింగ్ చదవవలసి ఉంటుందని తెలుసుకున్నాను. దక్షిణ భారతదేశమంతటిలోనూ సాంకేతిక విద్యకు తలమానికం లాంటి మద్రాస్ ఇన్స్టిట్యూట్ ఆఫ్ టెక్నాలజీలో ప్రవేశానికి దరఖాస్తు చేశాను. కష్టపడటమే సులువు నన్ను ఎమ్ఐటిలో అన్నిటికన్నా మిన్నగా ఆకర్షించింది అక్కడ ప్రదర్శనకోసం పెట్టిన రెండు పాత విమాన యంత్రాలు. విమాన యంత్రాల ప్రదర్శన కోసం అవక్కడుంచబడ్డాయి. వాటిపట్ల ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణకు లోనయ్యాను. విద్యార్థులంతా హాస్టల్కు వెళ్లిపోయాక కూడా చాలాసేపు వాటి దగ్గరే కూర్చుండేవాణ్ణి. పక్షిలాగా ఆకాశంలో విహరించాలన్న మనిషి ఆకాంక్షని ఆరాధిస్తూ అక్కడే గడిపేవాణ్ణి. ఎమ్.ఐ.టి.లో నా విద్యాభ్యాసంలో నా ఆలోచనని ముగ్గురు ఉపాధ్యాయులు తీర్చిదిద్దారు. వారు ప్రొ. స్పాండర్, ప్రొ. కె.ఏ.వి. పండలై. ప్రొ. నరసింగరావు గార్లు. వారిలో ప్రతి ఒక్కరిదీ ఒక ప్రత్యేక వ్యక్తిత్వం. కానీ అందరి ఆశయమూ ఒకటే - తమ విద్యార్థుల జ్ఞాన తృష్ణని తమ చైతన్యంతోనూ అకుంఠిత సంకల్పంతోనూ సంతృప్తిపరచడమే. ప్రొ.స్పాండర్ నాకు ఏరోడైనమిక్స్కి సంబంధించిన సాంకేతిక అంశాల్ని బోధించేవారు. ఎప్పుడూ శాంతంగా, శక్తిమంతంగా, స్వయంశిక్షితంగా ఉండేవాడు. సాంకేతిక రంగంలో వచ్చే మార్పుల్ని ఎప్పటికప్పుడు తెలుసుకుంటూ తన విద్యార్థుల్ని కూడా ముందుకు తీసుకుపోయేవాడు. భారతీయుల్లో ఆయన చూసిన లోపమేదైనా ఉందంటే వాళ్ళు తమకు కావలసింది సరిగ్గా ఎంచుకోలేకపోతున్నారనేది. ఉదాహరణకి ఎలక్ట్రికల్ ఇంజనీరింగ్ ఎందుకు? మెకానికల్ ఇంజనీరింగ్ ఎందుకు కాకూడదు? కొత్తగా ఇంజనీరింగ్లోకి ప్రవేశించే విద్యార్థులందరికీ నేనిచ్చే సలహా ఇదే. వాళ్ళు తమ బ్రాంచ్ ఎన్నుకోబోయే ముందు చూసుకోవలసింది ఏమంటే అది వాళ్ళ ఎంపిక, వాళ్ళ ఆంతరంగిక అనుభూతినీ, ఆకాంక్షనీ వ్యక్తం చెయ్యగలుగుతోందా లేదా అనే. ప్రొ. పండలై నాకు ఏరో స్ట్రక్చర్ డిజైన్నీ, విశ్లేషణనీ బోధించాడు. ఆయన చాలా కలుపుగోలు మనిషి. ఉల్లాసి. ప్రతి ఏడాదీ తన బోధనకి కొత్త మెరుగులు దిద్దుకునే ఉత్సాహవంతుడైన ప్రొఫెసర్. స్ట్రక్చరల్ ఇంజనీరింగ్ రహస్యాల్ని మాకు విప్పి చెప్పింది ఆయనే. ఎన్నో అంశాలపైన విద్యార్థులకి తరగతి గదిలో ఆయనతో విభేదించగలిగే స్వేచ్ఛ ఉండేది. ప్రొ. నరసింగరావు గణితశాస్త్రవేత్త. ఆయన మాకు ఏరో డైనమిక్స్ సిద్ధాంతాన్ని బోధించేవారు. ద్రవ పదార్థాల డైనమిక్స్ని బోధించేటప్పుడు ఆయన పాటించిన బోధనా పద్ధతి నాకిప్పటికీ గుర్తే. ఆయన తరగతులకు ఒకసారి హాజరయ్యాక మాథమెటికల్ ఫిజిక్స్ తప్ప మరే విషయం పైనా నా మనసు పోయేది కాదు. చలనానికీ, గమనానికీ, పక్కకి జారడానికి, ప్రవహించడానికీ మధ్య గల వ్యత్యాసాన్ని తెలుసుకోవడంలోనే విజ్ఞానశాస్త్ర రహస్యాలు దాగి ఉన్నాయి. తమ నిశిత బోధన వల్ల ఆ ముగ్గురూ ఏరోనాటిక్స్ పట్ల నాలో తృష్ణని జాగృతం చేశారు. నా జ్ఞానం సమగ్రవంతం కావడానికి ఆ ముగ్గురు ప్రొఫెసర్లు వారి వారి శ్రేష్ట వ్యక్తిత్వాలతో నాకెంతో సహకరించారు. నేను వారికి కృతజ్ఞుణ్ణి. |

China Overtakes Japan in Fortune 500 Rankings
Chinese firms have overtaken their Japanese peers on the Fortune Global 500 list of the world's largest companies for the first time, and will continue to gain market share at the expense of the more developed competitors as per fortune 500 magazine. China had 73 firms on the list, which ranks the world's biggest companies by revenue, compared to 61 last year. Japan stayed steady, with 68 firms. The biggest Chinese firms on the list are state-owned energy and utilities companies Sinopec Group, China National Petroleum and State Grid grabbed the fourth, fifth and sixth spots on the list.
Wrestler-actor Dara Singh dead
Dara Singh, a popular professional wrestler who parlayed his fame, physique and stouthearted image into a thriving Bollywood film career as India's first action hero, died. He was 83. Dara Singh Randhawa was born into a Sikh farming family on Nov. 19, 1928, in a village in the northern province of Punjab, near the Pakistan border. In the 1950s and '60s, the British wrestling historian Charles Mascall ranked Mr. Singh as the 10th-greatest heavyweight wrestler of all time. He became the Commonwealth Champion in 1959 and, in 1968, world champion when he defeated the American wrestler Lou Thesz. Mr. Singh was at the pinnacle of his prowess and fame as a wrestler when he started working in films in the 1950s. His massive physique and noble image made him ideal for characters that epitomized masculine strength and pride and heroic virtues. Among his Hindi cinema hits were "King Kong," "Samson" and "Tarzan Comes to Delhi." The popular Bollywood actress Mumtaz appeared with him in 16 films. Mr. Singh, who appeared in nearly 150 movies, later switched to character roles. He was also involved with Punjabi films as an actor, director and producer. For all his film work, he may be best remembered in India for a television role, that of the mythical monkey god Hanuman in the popular series "Ramayana," an adaptation of the Hindu epic.
Mark Boucher retires from international cricket
Mark Boucher of South Africa was forced to retire from international cricket because of an eye injury. Boucher has played in 147 Tests and 295 ODIs, he was struck by a ball during his team's tour opener against English county. Boucher made his international Test debut against Pakistan in 1997 .

Jagadish Shettar has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka along with two Deputy Chief Ministers KS Eshwarappa, who is the state Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) President, and R Ashok. Shettar .A total of 34 ministers were sworn in.

Former BCCI President P M Rungta died . He served as the BCCI President for a three-year term between 1972-73 to 1974-75. He Known as `Bhaiji` to his friends and close acquaintances, Rungta continued to be involved with the BCCI affairs for several years.
Sushil Kumar named India's flag bearer at Olympics
Beijing Olympics bronze medal winning wrestler Sushil Kumar will lead the Indian contingent at the opening ceremony of the London Games on July 27. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named Sushil as the flag-bearer for the contingent .
Australia's Brett Lee retires from international cricket
Australian fast bowler Brett Lee retired from international cricket .He will continue to play in Australia's Twenty20 Big Bash and the Indian Premier League. He took 310 test wickets at 30.81 and 380 one-day international wickets at 23.36, one short of Glenn McGrath's Australian record.
Agni-I successfully test fired
India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear capable Agni-I ballistic missile, with a strike range of 700 km, as part of the Army's user trial from a test range at Wheeler Island off Odisha coast. The surface-to-surface, single-stage missile, powered by solid propellants, was test-fired from a mobile launcher at about 1010 hrs from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range at Wheeler Island, about 100 km. Weighing 12 tonnes, the 15-metre-long Agni-I, which can carry payloads up to 1000 kg, has already been inducted into the Indian Army. Agni-I was developed by advanced systems laboratory, the premier missile development laboratory of the DRDO in collaboration with Defence Research Development Laboratory and Research Centre Imarat and integrated by Bharat Dynamics Limited, Hyderabad.
Freedom fighter Captain Lakshmi Sehgal dead
Captain Lakshmi Sehgal died. She was part of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's Indian National Army. She was 90 years old. She was was a revolutionist of the Indian independence movement, an officer of the Indian National Army, and the Minister of Women's Affairs in the Azad Hind government.In 1998 Sahgal was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by Indian president K. R. Narayanan
Pranab Mukherjee elected India's 13th President
Former finance minister Pranab Mukherjee elected the13th President of India . Mukherjee secured a vote value of 7,13,763, well ahead of the half-way mark of 5,25,140 in an electoral college of over 10.5 lakh. His rival PA Sangma, supported by some opposition parties including BJP, could manage get only a vote value 3,15,987. He chosen by a nationwide electoral college for a five-year term.
Rajesh Khanna Passed away
Rajesh Khanna originally Jatin Arora; (29 December 1942 – 18 July 2012) was a Bollywood actor, film producer and politician. He was referred to as the "first superstar" and the "original superstar" of Indian cinema. He appeared in 163 feature films of which 128 films saw him as the lead protagonist; he appeared in 17 short films as well. He won three Filmfare Best Actor Awards and was nominated for the same fourteen times. In 1991, he was awarded theFilmfare Special Award for completing 25 years in the industry, appearing in a record 106 films as the single lead protagonist in a span of 25 years. In 2005, he was awarded theFilmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also a Lok Sabha member of the Indian National Congress from New Delhi constituency from 1992 to 1996. After a long illness, Khanna died on 18 July 2012 .
QFIs can invest $1 b in MF debt schemes
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued guidelines allowing overseas individual investors to invest up to $1 billion in corporate bonds and debt schemes of mutual funds without any lock-in period. QFIs or overseas individual investors are permitted to invest in corporate debt securities without any lock-in or residual maturity clause and mutual fund debt schemes subject to a total overall ceiling of $1 billion. This limit shall be over and above the limit of $20 billion for FII investment in corporate debt.
Bradley Wiggins won the 99th Edition of Tour de France Bicycle Race
Bradley Wiggins of Britain became the first cyclist of the country, to win the coveted Tour de France Cycling race. Team Sky rider Wiggins is the first cyclist to have won both the Tour and an Olympic track cycling gold. His Sky teammate and fellow Briton, Froom Christopher came second.

SBI reduced the interest rate on the deposits of more than 5 years
India's leading bank State Bank of India (SBI) on 2 August 2012 reduced the interest rate on the deposits of five year and above to 8.5 percent. The new interest rate effected from 7 August 2012.
Kuchipudi Dance Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam passed away
Kuchipudi Dance Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam passed away on 29 July 2012. He was 83 years old. He was honoured with Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in the year 1998.
He was honoured with Kalidas Puraskar and Kalaimamani by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and Government of Tamil Nadu respectively. He was also honoured with a Doctorate degree by Andhra University.

Hamilton wins Hungarian GP

RBI keeps policy rates unchanged, SLR cut to 23%
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its April-June quarter monetary policy left the key policy rate unchanged. As a liquidity inducing-measure, RBI reduced the Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) — the amount of deposits banks park in government bonds — by 1 percent to 23 percent, effective August 11.The repo rate or the rate at which banks borrow from RBI remained at 8% while the reverse repo rate at which, the banks lend to RBI stood at 7%.
SLR is the percentage of total deposits that lenders need to invest in the government bonds. The reduction is aimed at ensuring free flow of credit growth through enough liquidity in the system.Cash Reserve Ratio or CRR is the portion of total deposits that banks are required to keep with the central bank also remained unchanged — at 4.75 percent.
Vijay Kumar wins silver in olympic 2012
Army sharp shooter Vijay Kumar today fought clinched the silver medal in the men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the Olympic Games . Kumar beat back the challenge of world champion Alexei Klimov of Russia, Chinese duo of Ding Feng and Zhang Jian and German Christian Reitz in the 40-shot final to finish runner-up in a thrilling finale behind Cuba's Leuris Pupo who shot his way to the gold with a world record equalling score of 34.
Saina Nehwal wins bronze medal
Saina Nehwal created history by becoming the first Indian to win an Olympic Games bronze medal in badminton, though under fortuitous circumstances, as her world number two Chinese opponent retired from the play-off because of a knee injury. The 22-year-old Saina was trailing 18-21, 0-1 in the high-voltage bronze medal play-off match when her second seeded opponent Xin Wang retired hurt, giving India an unexpected medal.

Normally only one award of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is given every year to an individual sportsperson. However, the Scheme provides that this condition can be relaxed in exceptional circumstances viz., winning of an Olympic medal.Like wise for the Arjuna Awards, normally not more than 15 awards are to be given in any calendar year. However, the Scheme of Arjuna Awards also provides that keeping in view the performance of Indian sportspersons in the Commonwealth, Asian Games and Olympic Games during a particular year, Arjuna Awards exceeding 15 in number may be allowed with proper justification and approval of the Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports. The Selection Committee noted that 2012 is the Olympic year and India has won 6 medals in the London Olympics, which is country’s best performance in Olympic Games, and recommended that the condition of one award in case of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratnaand 15 awards in case of Arjuna Awards may be relaxed and the number of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award may be increased from 1 (one) to 2 (two) and Arjun Awards may be increased from 15 (fifteen) to 25 (twenty five).
National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports. Rajiv Gandhi KhelRatna Award is given for spectacular performance in the year under consideration; Arjuna Award is given for consistently outstanding performance for three consecutive years preceding the year of award. Apart from a medal and a citation, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardees will receive a cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh each and Arjuna Awardees will receive statuettes, citations and cash prize of Rs.5 lakh each. The awardees will receive their awards from His Excellency the President of India at a specially organized function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29, 2012.

New Indian Navy chief
Admiral Devendra Kumar Joshi, an anti-submarine warfare specialist
took over as the new Indian Navy chief.
He succeeds Admiral Nirmal Verma, who retired from service after 43
years of service.
Admiral Joshi, who was till Thursday the Mumbai-based Western Naval
Commander, is the 21st navy chief of Independent India and the 19th
Indian to take command of the world's sixth largest naval force.
In the morning, Admiral Joshi paid tribute to the country's martyrs by
laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti in India Gate and inspected an
impressive Guard of Honour at the lawns of South Block, the seat of
the naval headquarters on Raisina Hill.
Later, in the office of the navy chief, Admiral Verma ceremonially
handed over the chief's telescope to Admiral Joshi to mark the handing
over of office from the incumbent to the successor.
In his maiden message to the navy, Admiral Joshi indicated his
priorities as the new chief. "For the navy to fulfil its mandate as a
maritime power for national prosperity, 24x7 attention would need to
be paid at all levels to ensure that there are no gaps in our security
preparedness," Joshi said.
He emphasised: "To achieve security related objectives, the
man-machine interface is crucial and the navy would need to
professionally re-audit, train and consolidate its preparedness to
optimise the existing capabilities as well as harness the full
potential of the transformational new capabilities being inducted."In
his 38-year service till now, Admiral Joshi has commanded guided
missile corvette INS Kuthar, guided missile destroyer INS Ranvir and
India's lone aircraft carrier INS Viraat.
He has also been awarded the Nausena Medal, Vishist Seva Medal and
Yudh Seva Medal, respectively, while commanding these warships.
Subsequently, he commanded the Eastern Fleet, when Ati Vishist Seva
Medal was awarded to him.
Admiral Joshi has also commanded the Andaman and Nicobar Command, the
only tri-service integrated formation of the country and was awarded
the Param Vishist Seva Medal during this time.
Later, he served as the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to Chairman,
Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC).
Admiral Joshi is a graduate of the U.S. Naval War College, an alumnus
of the Mumbai-based College of Naval Warfare and the capital-based
National Defence College. He was also the defence advisor in the
Indian high commission in Singapore from 1996 to 1999.
He is married to Chitra Joshi and the couple has two daughters.
